DIAGNOSTIC TESTING
Understand what your tests tell us.
An eye examination combines your symptoms, medical history, and clinical findings. A test is useful when it helps answer a question about diagnosis, treatment, or change over time.
Available in our office: OCT, Optos retinal imaging with fundus autofluorescence, and visual field testing. We select testing to answer a clinical question and coordinate additional specialist evaluation when needed.
Structure, function, and pressure
OCT: a view of layers
Optical coherence tomography uses light to produce cross-sectional images. Clinicians may use it to assess retinal layers or the tissue around the optic nerve.
Visual fields: a map of vision
You respond when you detect test lights. This helps map visual sensitivity, including areas outside the center of your vision.
Tonometry: eye pressure
Measures pressure inside the eye. A pressure number is interpreted alongside the nerve examination and other findings, not used as a diagnosis by itself.
Optos imaging & fundus autofluorescence
Our Optos system captures a wide view of the retina. Its fundus autofluorescence capability records naturally occurring signals from retinal tissue, providing another way to assess patterns of tissue health.
Autofluorescence is different from fluorescein angiography: it does not require an injected dye. Your clinician interprets the images alongside the examination and other tests. Imaging does not automatically replace the need for dilation.
Why repeat testing?
A single visit offers one set of findings. Repeat measurements can help your clinician judge whether a condition is stable or changing. For example, glaucoma care considers both nerve structure and visual function.
Ask which test is being repeated and what decision the result will inform. If you have prior scans or reports, request that they be shared with your treating clinician.
Other tests you may hear about
Retinal imaging & examination
A dilated examination lets the clinician inspect the retina. Images may document its appearance; OCT shows cross-sectional structure rather than the same view as a photograph.
Pachymetry & gonioscopy
Pachymetry measures corneal thickness. Gonioscopy examines the drainage angle. These can provide context when investigating glaucoma risk.
Tear-film testing
Tear breakup time and tear-production tests help evaluate dry eye. The clinician also considers the eyelids and eye surface.
A retinal specialist may recommend fluorescein angiography to assess blood-vessel leakage. Ultrasound may help evaluate the retina in selected situations.
What to expect & what to ask
Tell the team about previous reactions to eye drops, current medications, and the purpose of your visit. Ask whether dilation is planned and whether you should arrange a ride. Follow any preparation instructions specific to your test.
