Get help now for a sudden change
Seek immediate eye care or go to an emergency department. If you cannot promptly reach an eye clinician, do not wait for an online request or the next routine appointment.

Why the retina matters
The retina is light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye. A detachment separates it from its usual position and can cause permanent vision loss. A few longstanding floaters are different from a sudden new change, but only an examination can establish the cause.
What testing may involve
A dilated examination lets the clinician inspect the retina, including areas toward its edges. Ultrasound or OCT may be used if more information is needed. Describe exactly when the symptoms started and whether vision is missing in any area.
Tell the clinician about previous eye surgery, significant injury, or a history of retinal problems. Bring previous records if they are readily available, but do not delay urgent care to collect them.
Treatment & expected outcomes

A retinal specialist may use laser or freezing treatment to seal a tear, or surgery for a detachment. The approach depends on the findings. Prompt treatment can help protect vision, but the amount recovered depends on the damage and cannot be guaranteed.
Ask the treating team about activity restrictions, follow-up, and what to do if symptoms change again. Follow the individual postoperative instructions if a procedure is performed.
